The ominous weather warning issued by the South African Weather Services serves as a warning to the public about the threats of heavy rains, localized floods, and very milder storms in many Provinces of the Republic in the upcoming days. Some warnings advise one to sit on his/her supplies in the case of an interruption in day-to-day life, land transport, infrastructure development, to name but a few.
Warnings to Provinces
According to SAWS’ latest forecast, the worst rainfall and storm activity may hit:
- KwaZulu-Natal,
- Eastern Cape,
- Mpumalanga,
- Limpopo,
- And parts of Gauteng and Free State.
Heavy rainfall and swell from the rough sea may cause flooding on the coastal stretches, more particularly in KwaZulu-Natal. Mountain areas may face a threat of mudslides and dangerous road conditions.
Hazards arising due to Weather System
The present weather system is forecasted to produce the following incidences:
- Heavy Rainfall: Widespread showers above 50 mm within 24 hours in some localities.
- Severe Thunderstorms: These thunderstorms pass lightning and strong winds, while sometimes they might hail.
- Flooding: Rivers will overflow, flooding occurs in low-lying areas, and possibly flash floods occur in the cities.
- A storm surge: Coastal areas will be battered by huge waves and very aggressive sea conditions.
The combination that triggers these phenomena imposes a serious threat on human settlement, transport, and agriculture.
What Residents Have to Do
The authorities suggest the South Africans to:
- Do not try to cross streets or bridges currently submerged in water; the fast-flowing water will just sweep away the vehicle.
- Keep plug appliances away from power points while entertaining storms at home, as they could be affected by lightning.
- Have in storage emergency supplies that can be accessed at a moment’s notice, including torches, drinking water, essential medicines, etc.
- The teams are on an emergency basis and thus these will respond in a matter of moments.
Effect on Daily Life –
Severe weather will bring road transport and power supply into paralysis- with some main or arterial routes expected to experience delay. Air traffic to Durban and East London could potentially stand endangered.Accessibilities may prove to be a problem for rural communities, the roads set to degrade into impassability; the urban now may suffer from traffic congestion of streets and infrastructural damage. Temporary shelter arrangements are put in place by the local authorities, should flooding displace working-age residents.
