From October 1, 2025, SASSA will have a stricter vetting procedure for applicants who have income in excess of R8,070 per month. The vetting measure seeks to ensure that social assistance is provided only to those most in need.
Conditions for Continuity of Grant Payment
The conditions of grant applicants for continuity of grant payments through SASSA are as follows:
- Monthly Income Limit: Income of the applicant must not exceed R8,070.
- Asset Thresholds: Assets of the applicant must be below R1,524,600 in the case of single persons, and R3,049,200 for married couples.
- Full Disclosure: Beneficiaries must under full disclosure declare all sources of income and assets.
How it May Affect Current Grant Recipients
Those whose monthly incomes exceed R8,070 shall, however, no longer stand to receive the grants under SASSA. This entails the likes of Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, and Child Support Grant recipients. The said policy intends to direct assistance to those who truly need it financially.
Transition Period and Verification Procedure
SASSA has started the process of verification to confirm who among the beneficiaries are potentially eligible. The notification of status has started going out, and those who are said to be over the threshold of income should also be notified that their grants have been stopped.
Appeals and Assistance to Affected Persons or Individuals
Any person who feels that he or she has been unjustly disqualified may appeal that decision. SASSA provides 30 days within which an appeal may be lodged and accompanied by further documentation or information. Assistance is provided in the execution of the appeal process.
