The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has commenced the suspension and cancellation of social grants for the beneficiaries whose income and status are still under review. These actions target beneficiaries who are alleged to be in possession of undisclosed income or whose financial circumstances do not meet the qualifying thresholds. Many public advocacy bodies have expressed concern as a matter of urgency over abrupt suspensions in clear cases.
Who Is At Risk of A Grant Termination?
Among the grants affected are disability grants, child support grants, and old age pensions. Beneficiaries who are alleged to be earning more income and those who fail to respond to verification requests are, therefore, the most vulnerable. In many cases, payments have been suspended without any notice or a proper explanation, thus leaving several recipients to be left surprised by this and some even not being able to access their funds.
The Role of Grant Reviews & Income Disclosure
SASSA views the cancellations as part of a broader verification process. They are conducting audits to confirm the identities of beneficiaries who might be obtaining an undisclosed income or whose eligibility for the grant may have been affected. Once identified, they have to submit some extra documents and respond to further inquiries, affirming their exact income status within a stipulated time frame; otherwise, the considered grants may be suspended. An alternative is that the beneficiary will be removed for non-response.
Moneyweb reported that over 210,000 social grant beneficiaries were flagged for improper income disclosure as part of this crackdown.
Protest & Complaints Growing
Community groups like Black Sash have expressed their opinion strongly, noting that complaints have skyrocketed from beneficiaries who say they were cut off with no explanation. Many older persons or persons with disabilities only found out their grant got suspended when the payments failed to come through. The groups argue that SASSA-level communication is very poor, especially in rural areas.
Black Sash maintains, as do other organizations, that beneficiaries must be accorded dignity, transparency, and adequate notice prior to any grant suspension, rather than being simply terminated with no communication.

Should the suspension or cancellation of your grant occurred to you, you have the right to appeal. Go to the nearest SASSA office, request a written explanation, furnish supporting documentation, and file a formal appeal within the stipulated timeframe. Meanwhile, check on your SASSA status, keep your records updated, and promptly respond to any communication or verification requests.
Possible Disruptions to Payments Linked to Postbank Contract
Apart from reviews, another problem looms: the possible non-renewal of SASSA’s service contract with Postbank, which is due to expire in September 2025. Over 2 million beneficiaries stand to face delays or stoppages to payments if this contract is not renewed smoothly or replaced with another.
