In October 2025, the South African government undertakes the implementation of a slight increase in pension grants under the Older Persons Grant. Payments of R2,315 each month will be given to the grant holders from age 60 to 74, whereas those aged 75 and above will be able to draw an amount of R2,335. Although the increase is very small, it is aimed at alleviating the plight of older persons as the cost of living goes up.
Onset of the Payout Period in October
According to a timeline, SASSA pension payments begin on the 3rd of October, 2025. Funds shall then be made available to ATMs, partner stores, or SASSA pay points through that day. The system is designed to have the fund processed and made available within the same day to offer the ease of withdrawal to the pensioners.
Who Are Eligible?
Who can benefit from the new rates? Certain conditions have to be met by an applicant:
- Is at least 60 years of age
- Is a South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee status holder
- Is not receiving any other social grant
- Has an income and assets below the prescribed limits and is assessed together with the spouse in case of being married
- Has to present a valid identification, proof of residence, and proof of income/assets for application purposes
These eligibility requirements are intended to guarantee that pension benefits are awarded exclusively to irrefutably needy applicants.
How This Boost Helps
The increase in pension payments, even if rather small, really goes a long way for older adults who find themselves having to barely afford basic necessities like food, health care, and transportation. Most pensioners have hardly enough money to get by, and this tiny raise is the government’s very way of trying to tide support over inflationary pressures.
