SASSA was established as the principal agency for distributing different types of grants to poor citizens. In 2025, for the first time, the Social Relief Grant of R560 was introduced to aid low-income households in distress. South Africans are brimming with questions: Who is qualified for the grant? How is it going to work? When are the payments scheduled? The answers follow with full detail.
What is the SASSA R560 grant?
High prices of basic amenities and unemployment have been blowing against people, granting SASSA the power to intervene and provide monetary assistance through a special R560 grant. This is unlike the Old Age Grant or Disability Grant, and so does not last forever but is administered on a monthly basis for a short period so as to assist citizens unable to meet their day-to-day needs but who do not fit under other formal grants. By law, this grant is similar to the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant, except it is meant for different beneficiaries who satisfy certain conditions.
The R560 grant: Who qualifies in 2025?
The R560 grant is intended for the working poor who may remain overlooked regarding state assistance. The qualifications are:
- A South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee.
- Aged between 18 and 59 years.
- Unemployed earning less than R8,070 as set by SASSA as the income threshold for 2025.
- Not in receipt of any other SASSA grant, UIF benefits, or allowances.
- Should pass a means assessment undertaken by SASSA to prove financial vulnerability.
Occurrences like single parenthood and unemployment, including youth unrest, would be viewed favorably in consideration for this special dispensation.
Payment Amount and Duration
The grant is disbursed to a successful applicant at a rate of R560 per month. The amount is too small to be considered sufficient, which is why it is intended only to cover basic living expenses such as food, transport, and electricity.It was stated that the grant would only run for a year, after which reviews will be conducted on its further extension or amendment if necessary.
The Payments Dates for 2025
In the morning, the same grants are scheduled to be paid monthly. Such cash grants fall under child maintenance for the sake of the month in payment to the beneficiary after the major grants (Old Age, Disability, and Child Grants).The payment dates for the last quarter of 2025 are:
- 7th of October 2025: Tuesday (there has been a change in payment date!);
- 7th of November 2025: Friday;
- 8th of December 2025: Monday;
- The payments are made by direct credit into beneficiaries’ bank accounts or through authorized SASSA collection points.
