Whereas many of these SASSA grants will see a slight R10 increase in October 2025, the Child Support Grant will remain frozen at R560. The planned increase for “core” grants such as old age, disability, and care dependency does not apply to children under 18.
The calendar effect will also see child support payments being paid late, unlike other grants. Beneficiaries will have to wait until Monday, 6 October 2025, to receive their payments, thus late in comparison with older persons’ grants and disability grants.
Why Child Support Grant Was Excluded
In the author’s view, it is believed that exclusion is sometimes motivated by cost pressures: one of the highest-cost grants is the Child Support Grant, as it is paid for by over 13 million children. The Department of Social Development may have felt that further increases were not sustainable in the current budget climate.
In contrast, the Child Disability / Child Disability (under-18) component—that is, care dependency grants for children—will still be benefited by the increase for the so-called “core” clients.
Withholding & Reviewing Grants
SASSA has intensified auditing of child support grant accounts. If a recipient’s income surpasses the allowed limits or the identity cannot be verified, the grant may be subject to review or suspension.
Withheld grants require beneficiaries to visit a SASSA office, where they must re-verify or respond to inquiries. Accounts left idle or unresolved for over three months are, however, liable to being closed.
The article cites an instance where a child support grant for the mother was suspended when the mother became employed: Income change was noted, and she was asked to repay previous payments.
How to Apply & Important Dates
An income limit must be proven to be eligible for the Child Support Grant as of October 2025: R4,400 per month (R52,800 annually) if single, or R8,800 if monthly for married couples (R105,600 annually). Valid IDs (for both caregiver and child), proof of residence, marital status, and proof of income (bank statements, etc.) are needed. Applications take a maximum of three months to process; thus, potential applicants are advised to apply early. One can also appeal against a rejection within 90 days.”
Confirmed paydates for this October are Monday, October 6, 2025, and upcoming paydates will be Thursday, November 6, 2025, and Thursday, December 4, 2025.
