The South African Social Security Agency had to uplift some of the Disability Grant with a fixed amount actually set at R3,000 by January 2025. Such an arrangement would have led to the greater disbursement of financial support for persons with disabilities who are burdened with increased medical, transport, and daily living expenses. This is one of the ways to secure vulnerable groups in light of rising costs of living in terms of government policy.
Disability Grant Increase Scheme: Quick Overview
Until a couple of years ago, disability grant beneficiaries were paid just R2,085. Since the 2025 increase, the recipients have now been elevated to R3,000 monthly, one of the largest increases in recent times. The increase was put in place to pay respect to the continuous difficulties faced by disabled persons in South Africa while trying to survive on these grants. The adjustment shall be effective on the first day of April 2025 and shall remain so for the remainder of the financial year.
Who qualify for the disability grant of R3,000?
SASSA sets stringent criteria, which one must meet in order to be able to apply for the benefit: The applicant must be a South African citizen, a permanent resident, or a refugee in South Africa:
- Age: Must fall between the ages of 18-59 years.
- Medical Assessment: The disability must be certified by a state-appointed medical practitioner to be temporary or permanent, and thus not allowing the person to perform work.
- Means: The earnings and assets of the applicant should be below the threshold set by SASSA. This simply means that applicants should be persons who are financially disabled.
- Another social grant: Under the existing provision, a beneficiary cannot receive more than one social assistance grant, except for child support grants.
Temporary disability grants are disbursed for the duration of six months to a year, which means that the period for granting may be renewed; however, permanent disability grants are for a longer period.
Payment Methods for Beneficiaries
SASSA tries to safely and conveniently give beneficiaries access to their R3,000 Disability grants through different payment channels:
- Direct Bank Deposits: This is the safest and fastest, because payments get deposited straight into the bank accounts of beneficiaries; these beneficiaries can use it if they have bank accounts.
- SASSA Gold Card: It can be used at ATMs and select retail outlets such as Shoprite, Boxer, Pick n Pay, and Spar.
- Community Pay Points: Local arrangements in rural areas for the unbanked and those without access to an ATM.
Beneficiaries are advised from a security perspective to prefer the digital and retail options, over standing in long queues at physical pay points.
Dates of Payments for 2025
In its statement, the organization has confirmed that disability grant payments shall commence on the 4th of each month from 2025. If the said day falls on a weekend or public holiday, payment will be made on the next working day. Beneficiaries will be able to use money deposited in their account from any day – hence they are advised not to rush to the pay points on the very first day.
