R560 + R280 SASSA Grant 2025: Full Eligibility Guide For Caregivers

By 2025 South Africa Social Security Agency (SASSA) continues with the Child Support Grant (CSG) at the base rate of R560 per child per month. On top of this, some children may qualify for additional top-up amount of R280 per month, such as orphans or children in child-headed households being cared for by relatives, thereby raising their monthly support to R840 (R560 + R280).

It is especially targeted at helping the neediest children who have no parental care and are fully dependent on relatives or guardians for their upbringing.

Who Can Qualify for the Top-Up?

Not every child under the standard CSG arrangement can get an additional R280; that top-up is meant for orphaned children residing with relatives or in child-headed households, where normal support structures do not exist.

To Qualify:

  • The child must already be in receipt of or be eligible for the standard CSG.
  • The caregiver will be required to produce proof that he or she is the relative (grandparent, aunt, uncle, sibling, cousin, etc.) and that the child is orphaned (either in the form of death certificates or a sworn affidavit should the death of one parent be unknown).
  • The income of the caregiver must meet the same means test applied to the standard CSG.
  • If it is a case of a child-headed household, social services (DSD) must provide further recognition to validate the status for, among others, a supervising adult to be appointed.

Therefore, in simplified terms, the top-up is not meant for all children receiving the CSG but rather those with greater vulnerability and fewer avenues for support.

Application Method for the Top-Up

Caregivers already receiving the standard CSG may apply for the additional top-up through the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA). It usually requires giving:

  1. Certified copies of death certificates of one or both biological parents. Or, in the event that the death certificate cannot be obtained for one parent, an affidavit that has been commissioned attesting to the unknown status of the other parent.
  2. Evidence of the relation to the child and that you are the primary guardian.
  3. Further income and other financial declarations that comply with the means test.
  4. Completion of the specified SASSA forms, which indicate that you apply for the additional payment (referred to as “CSG Top-Up”).
  5. In the case of child-headed households, a letter of recognition by DSD and information about the supervising adult.

These top-ups are paid with the standard CSG payment once approved.

Benefits & Impact

This top-up closes the funding gaps of children who do not enjoy parental support for their financial security and helps guardians with day-to-day costs such as food, school supplies, health, and accommodation. Around with the top-up, a social worker’s administrative burden is significantly decreased, as there is no longer the need to consider first whether relatives are performing care for orphans under foster care legislation.
