SASSA Announces New Grant Verification Rules: What To Submit By 29 October

Beginning October 29th, with the coming of stricter regulations for grant beneficiaries, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has launched a drive. A grant beneficiary now has to file additional documents; without this, benefits could linger under delay or get suspended outright, or the beneficiary may lose it permanently. The reason for this is because SASSA is intensifying verification to reduce fraud and allow sole deserving beneficiaries to enjoy the grants.

Why the Change?

In the past few years, there have been suspicious cases of under-the-table incomes, irregularities, and identity fraud in the social grants. With a view to preserve the integrity of the system and adhere to the budgetary provisions, SASSA is tightening its oversight process. The agency intends to service “the right social grant, to the right person, at the right time and place.” By asking for further proof, SASSA expects to flush away fraudulent claims and keep away from those who are truly in need.

What Documentation Will Be Required?

Among the beneficiaries undergoing the verification process conducted by SASSA, the following supporting documents are needed:

  • Certified copy of the applicant’s Identity Document or Smart ID book (to be submitted along with the original document)
  • Bank statements for all active bank accounts opening balances over the past 3 months
  • Termination letter from previous employment or an affidavit should the letter not be available
  • Birth certificates of the children associated with the grant and affidavits concerning parental status or whereabouts
  • Documents describing ownership of the property, rate/tax bills-if the property is empty
  • Any proof of other means of income or economic activities

Beneficiaries who fail to hand in the required documentation by the deadline under risk of having their grants suspended and, in protracted non-compliance, possibly cancelled altogether.

Whom It Affects?

Though SASSA has not instituted a blanket enforcement of the new rules on every beneficiary, they will go after those Persons already in the system for income non-disclosure or those persons using non-standard identification. Time is of the essence, so anybody who has received a notice or is within a group currently under interrogation has got to act fast to keep service running.

Risks and Penalties

Failure to comply is severely penalized. A beneficiary who does not respond or furnish the required documentation may have his monthly grant withheld; in extreme cases, it will be charged out permanently. Similarly, prolonged delays for approval or reinstatement will leave vulnerable individuals without this support for such long periods of time.

Steps to Prepare for

Beneficiaries should remain proactive by:

  • Checking for any communication from SASSA (letters, SMS, official notice).
  • Getting requirements earlier and ensuring certification when necessary.
  • Visiting the nearest SASSA office when a request is made to him.
  • Seeking assistance if it becomes difficult to secure any document within time (for example, an affidavit).
  • Checking official SASSA outlets for updates and instructions.
