In response to the grant payments instituted at South African social safety net in October 2025, it called for an increase worthy of absorption. The South African populace viewed this upgrading and associated interventions as a dose of relief to millions of vulnerable citizens with mounting inflation: the elderly, disabled, and families with needy children. A Brief History of SASSA Grants
Social grants are issued by SASSA to assist those in need. The two most important programs are the grant for Older Persons for those persons aged 60 and older; the Disability Grant for persons who are permanently disabled; and the Child Support Grant for foster parents caring for children below the age of 18. Other grants include Foster Care Grants and Care Dependency Grants for children with severe disabilities. If activated, the SRD Grant is essentially interim relief for the unemployed. These grants are means-tested, requiring no contributions, and monthly payments are issued either via direct deposit or at the post office, with over 18 million beneficiaries serviced countrywide.
Dates of Payment for October 2025
Fee payments were staggered by SASSA for convenience in handling volumes. Calendars in hand:
- Older Persons Grant (60 plus): Thursday 2 October 2025
- Disability Grant: Friday 3 October 2025
- All Child Grants (Child Support, Foster Care, and Care Dependency): Monday 6 October 2025
Payments are made on or before the stated dates, while the older persons’ grant is done by order of the last three digits of the ID number; all others are done in order of grant types.
Eligibility and Some Application Tips
One has to be a citizen of South Africa or at least have a permanent-resident status or refugee status, and be 18 years old and above. The candidate should normally not earn above R78,120 per annum for most grants (with the cap being higher for disability grants). The old-age grant, however, is free from any asset test, but applicants must still have to provide proof of income-and of their disability with their identity document. Submission and lodging of appeals can take place online at srd.sassa.gov.za or any SASSA office. If they are currently benefitting, they need to do nothing unless their circumstances change. SMS or app-enabled notifications keep beneficiaries abreast of payments.
How to Receive Payment and Stay Updated
The grants are paid by depositing cash into an approved bank account, while cash can be withdrawn at Pick n Pay outlets with the use of a SASSA card.
