SASSA Grant Increase for September 2025: New Amounts and Dates. Although they are trying to help sustain people who have had rising costs of living, the South African Social Security Agency has confirmed changes in grant amounts and clearly defined payment dates for September 2025. Changes relating to the grants are herein described along with the consequences for beneficiaries and what to expect.
Grant Amounts Revised for 2025
These social grants increased at any time from April 2025 up to September:
- Old Age & Disability Grants: By R130 a month (from R2 185 to R2 315).
- War Veterans Grant: R2,335 (also R130 up).
- Foster Care Grant: From R1,180 to R1,250.
- Care Dependency Grant: Placed also at R2,315.
- Child Support Grant/Grant-in-Aid: Increased from R530 to R560 per beneficiary.
- Social Relief of Distress Grant: Remains at R370 per month from the previous adjustment.
All of these increases were in fact budgeted within the 2025 national budget, with almost R284.7 billion having been allocated to social grants for the 2025/26 period.
Dates of Payment for September 2025
The SABSSO has confirmed that for the disbursement of funds in September 2025, beneficiaries may plan accordingly.
- Grant Type: For Old Age Grant (older persons)
- Payment Date: Tuesday, 2 September 2025
- For Disability Grant: Wednesday, 3 September 2025
- For Child Support & Other Grants: Thursday, 4 September 2025 The SRD Grant of R370 will be paid from 24 September until 30 September 2025.
- SASSA has also informed the beneficiaries that there is no need to rush to collection points on the first day as the money will sit in the accounts.
- What These Changes Portend for Beneficiaries. More financial assistance: Beneficiary increases constitute little or no help to vulnerable sectors already ensnared in a whirlwind of inflation and rising costs of essentials. Such an uplift might not offset the rising expenditures; however, tributes of extra income from these grants surely matter for a few families whom these grants are an earning source.
- Predictability and planning: With fixed paydates, beneficiaries can plan withdrawals and budgeting accordingly and will not have to crowd the pay points on the first day itself. Hence staggered payment dates put less pressure on ATMs and collection points.
- Look out for unauthorized deductions: SASSA would like to reiterate that deductions from social grants are regulated: There should be only one deduction in a month and such a deduction should be done only if the beneficiary has given consent to it. Beneficiaries should report any unauthorized deduction immediately.
- Stay abreast with policy shifts: With the phasing out of SASSA’s Master Services Agreement (MSA) come September 2025—which in turn brings changes to cash payments—there could be some alterations to the mechanisms of grant disbursement.
