Before October 2025 grant cycle, SASSA clarified that blanket cancellations of social grants will no longer be affected for all beneficiaries. However, the agency warned that certain cases might be put under review for possible suspension or cancellation when breach of eligibility criteria has occurred. The public is further warned not to panic — those that are cancelled will only be through due process and not through indiscriminate removal.
Some Grants Are Under Review for a Reason
SASSA is undertaking eligibility reviews of several beneficiaries allegedly flagged for non-compliance.
- A few reasons for review could be:
- Income not disclosed or income generated through other means that are not declared at application
- Change of financial status rendering a person non-eligible under the means test
- Failure to respond to requests by SASSA for verification such as documentation (income or bank statements; identity or proof of residence)
- Discrepancies in contact or personal details making it impossible for a beneficiary to be traced
SASSA stresses that being under review is just a safeguard to ensure the integrity of the social assistance system and not to unjustly penalize beneficiaries who are rightfully entitled.
How Cancelations or Suspensions Could Happen
Even though blanket cancellations are off the table, individual suspensions or cancellations may occur through these steps:
- Notification & Request for Verification
Beneficiaries under review will be contacted and requested to furnish additional proof (payslips, bank statements, IDs). - Grace Period A window is given to respond and comply; failure to do so may result in the temporary suspension.
- Suspension Where no meaningful response or documentation is furnished within the timeframe, payments under the grant may be suspended.
- Final Cancellation After which should the beneficiary sans compliance or be held ineligible, the grant may be canceled permanently.
There is usually an opportunity during suspension for the beneficiary to appeal or submit evidence in order to reinstate the grant.
What Beneficiaries Should Do Now
To avoid unintended suspensions or cancellations, beneficiaries should:
- Update any personal and contact details with SASSA records
- Respond immediately to all notices or requests for verification
- Compile any documentation that may be requested, such as payslips, bank statements, proof of residence, identity documents
- Could be requested to visit the local offices of SASSA, or if unsure of status.
- Keep an eye on your grant status regularly through the SASSA portal or by way of communication.
