R10 shall be added to social grants across the board by SASSA starting 1 October 2025. That means, old age grants are on the slight side of the uplift, with beneficiaries receiving slightly more in monthly payments. ThisR10 increase is a second-step adjustment in accordance with a two-step adjustment schedule set out in the national budget, there having been a bigger increase earlier this year.
What Are Pensioners Getting More Of Now?
The grant for old age, in terms of the new structure, will rise from R2,310 to R2,320 for the greater majority of beneficiaries, where it will rise for those pensioners of age 75 years and above from R2,330 to R2,340. The other grant types also get their R10: War Veterans’ Grant, Disability Grant, Care Dependency.
Although this increase is small, the bump-up was intended to help cushion vulnerable households under the weight of inflation and economic pressure.
What Is the Date for the October Grants Being Paid?
SASSA has confirmed the payout dates for October 2025 on the following:
- Old Age Grants: 2 October 2025
- Disability Grants: 3 October 2025
- Children’s / other grants: 6 October 2025
The beneficiaries are encouraged to withdraw payments for the days following their scheduled date instead of for the whole month on one particular day, in order to prevent the crowding at points of payment.
Impact and Limitations of the Increase
The R10 increase is fairly small, especially in an environment of high inflation when many households are facing it. Still, for pensioners reliant heavily on social grants, every small increment counts. Yet, this increase does not apply to the R370 SRD grant, which remains unchanged. Also, since the uniform increment applies to all types of grants, it may not be enough for recipients most vulnerable to price increases.
What Beneficiaries Should Do
- Confirm that the status of your grant and your eligibility are current.
- Your banking details/contact details should be updated with SASSA to allow for possible payment delays.
- Always note your payment date and collect within days to avoid the queues or congestion.
- In case the elevated amount is not reflected, do visit your local SASSA office or call the support line.
