The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has initiated an emergency worldwide financial aid programme known as the R1000 Cash Boost to assist in easing the pressures on low-income households caused by rising prices. An immediate incentive with a one-time payment, on top of existing social grants, has been created for vulnerable families. Distribution for the R1000 Cash Boost has been scheduled for September 2025.
Eligibility Criteria
The requirements to be eligible for the R1000 Cash Boost include the following:
- Citizenship: Be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or registered refugee.
- Existing Grant Recipient: Those who are registered with SASSA for an existing grant (such as Older Persons Grant or Disability Grant) or are considered to be under low-income thresholds defined by SASSA.
- Income Limits: Fall within the set income limits, which differ according to the grant type, for example, Social Relief of Distress grant thresholds are set at around R624/month.
- Documentation: Bring along valid identification; name and address details to prove residence, and grant information in case an applicant is an existing beneficiary.
Beneficiaries are urged to keep their particulars updated with SASSA in order to prevent delays in receiving the cash boost.
Payment Schedule
The R1000 Cash Boost will be paid in conjunction with social grant payments. For instance, in the case of the Older Persons Grant, payments proceed to beneficiaries on the 2nd while the latter date serves the same purpose for the Disability Grant, otherwise, Child Support Grant payments occur on the 6th. The cash boost will be paid in addition to these payments either wholly or in installments, depending on administrative arrangements.
Important Notes
- Interim Measure: The R1000 amount was paid as a once-off measure as opposed to it being a permanent increase in the base-grant amounts.
- No Application: Eligible beneficiaries are not required to apply for the cash boost since it is merged and paid with their regular grant payments.
- Yet To Be Officially Confirmed: While media reports state that the cash boost is slated for release in September 2025, SASSA has not issued official confirmation on the grant categories to be included.
