South African War Veteran Grant 2025: How To Apply, Eligibility & Payout Schedule

The grant South African War Veteran Grant provides much-needed financial support to those who served in World War II or the Korean War. As of October 2025,the grant was increased to R2,340 per month. The government sees this as a means to enable veteran populations to meet their rising costs of living. This grant aims to honour the sacrifice of these veterans and by doing so, tries to grant them some measure of financial support during their late years. 

Who Qualifies for This Grant?

To qualify, applicants must meet a number of criteria. First of all, they have to anzova served during either World War II (1939–1945) or the Korean War (1950–1953). Age or disability will also be considered if applying. Applicants must be at least 60 years of age or disabled. Only South African citizens or permanent residents living in South Africa are eligible to apply for this grant.

There is a means test that considers income and assets, with the value of your home excluded. Also, persons already receiving any other personal social grant and those staying in any government institutions would usually not apply.

Veterans applying on account of their disability may be subjected to a medical assessment. The application may be submitted at the SASSA offices, via home visits to those applicants who may not travel, or on the official SASSA website. Processing may take anything between two and three months, after which the grants are approved and backdated to the date of application.

Payment Methods and Annual Requirements

Once payment is authorized, monies may be deposited into a bank account or into a Postbank account or be paid out in cash at designated pay points. For persons residing in an institution, the grant may be paid directly to the institution concerned. Life certificates need to be submitted by veterans annually to confirm their eligibility. Furthermore, SASSA is allowed to conduct a periodic review of the beneficiary’s status to ensure he or she still qualifies. The beneficiary’s failure to comply or provision of false information shall lead to the suspension or termination of the grant.
