What Is the Unemployed Citizens Relief Fund?

The UCRF top-up grant for temporary relief is for conservation of unemployed South Africans who are not eligible to UIF (Unemployment Insurance Fund), or any other grants granted by the state. It focuses on working-age adults in search of employment, thus, different from permanent SASSA grants. Beyond offering short-term financial relief, the program means to incentivize these people in looking for jobs, enrollment training, or acquiring new skills.

Who Can Install the Fund in 2025?

The well-drafted set of conditions that must be fulfilled to be given the UCRF ensures that those who are truly without jobs and vulnerable stand to benefit from it. The applicant shall: 

  • Must be a South African citizen, permanent resident, or recognized refugee. 
  • Aged between 18 and 59 years. 
  • Unemployed and not receiving benefits from UIF. 
  • Not receiving any other grant from SASSA (Old Age Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant). 

Undergoes an income means test proving that the applicant cannot provide a significant source of income or assets. The emphasis also gets placed on young-jobseekers, long-term unemployed, and households with no person continuously employed.

How Much Is the Payment

The Government announced on 15th September 2025 the monthly pay-out of R1200 to present for consideration for an application devised under the Unemployed Citizens’ Relief Fund. However, according to need and household composition, a household may further qualify for a R400 food voucher. This money was mainly for emergency needs, food, transport to school and from school, and communication while the beneficiaries were actively looking for a job.

How to Apply for This Grant

The Fund is quite easy to access, and the Government, in fact, has put Systems into place for both online and offline filing. There is again an online filing system.

Applying Online

  1. Log on to the SASSA website or Department of Social Development website. 
  2. Create an account by entering your ID number and contact number. 
  3. Fill in an application form online indicating your personal information, economic standing, and employment details.
  4. Attach documents supporting your claim such as Sundry-certificate of unemployment or bank statement.

Applying Offline

  1. Visit the nearest SASSA office or community services center. 
  2. Collect an application form, take it home, and complete the form. 
  3. Go back to the office and submit the completed application form along with all required documents. 
  4. Once accepted, an SMS confirming acceptance would be sent to you. Payment is effected either by direct bank credit or cash-send to those beneficiaries with no bank accounts. 

Requirements for Documentation

When applying, you will need:

  • A valid South African ID or refugee permit.
  • Proof of residence.
  • Bank details or an affidavit if you do not have a bank account.
  • A signed declaration of unemployment.
