Minister Lindiwe Zulu of Basic Social Development has announced major changes to the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grant for October 2025. Beneficiaries stand to receive up to R3,070, and few may receive two payments within one month. The department is, thus, working toward providing more income to vulnerable South Africans as they encounter the struggles of the cost of living.
Why is the payment higher than usual in October?
Typically, the SRD grants set aside R370 per month for qualifying recipients. However, since October 2025, some recipients could receive monies for various months due to back-dated claims, pending approvals, or missed payments in previous cycles. Such monies can amount to R3,070, constituting a huge windfall for the households dependent on the grant.
Who qualifies for the R3,070?
Not all applicants may receive this amount; it includes applicants who:
- Have their SRD application approved with clear verification issues.
- Have declared income below the set threshold.
- Are South African citizens, permanent residents, or qualifying refugees/asylum seekers.
- Have their bank details current and verified.
- If payments faced delays for some beneficiaries in previous months, one might expect backdated releases to accompany the Octobre payment.
2025 October Payment Calendar
SASSA has confirmed that payments will be made from the 24th to the 31st of October 2025, with funds being released in batches, thereby preventing payments to all recipients on one and the same day. In addition, there may be a banking clearance process which could delay funds for an additional 2-3 business days before they reflect in one’s bank account.
Beneficiaries are urged to keep an eye on their payment status through the SASSA SRD online site or by means of USSD or WhatsApp services given by the agency.
What Beneficiaries Need to Do
Ensure smooth payments in October by:
- Verify bank details with SASSA prior to the opening of the payout window.
- Check SRD Status online if there seems to be a problem with your payments; an update might have been added.
- Try to remain calm as payments will stagger for a couple days due to processes being done in batches.
- Getting in touch with SASSA must be done if you remain unmoved and delayed at times after the payout window.
