Sometimes, the biggest moments on a talent show happen when a performance doesn’t go according to plan.
That is exactly what happened when a nervous singer stepped onto the Britain’s Got Talent stage and began her audition. She had already been worried about performing in front of such a huge audience, but within moments, Simon Cowell stopped her performance.
What happened next completely changed the direction of the audition.
A Singer Who Was Nervous to Step Onto the Stage
The singer was Sian Pattison, a 31-year-old accounts manager from Warwickshire.
Unlike many contestants who confidently apply for talent shows themselves, Sian needed a little encouragement. Her 10-year-old daughter was the one who submitted her application for Britain’s Got Talent. ITV reported that Sian had struggled with nerves and had previously allowed them to hold her back from pursuing singing full-time.
Despite her nervousness, she eventually found herself standing in front of the judges.
And then the audition began.
Simon Cowell Stopped Her First Song
Sian started her audition with “Ave Maria.”
But she had barely begun when Simon Cowell interrupted the performance.
For a contestant who was already nervous about being judged, being stopped in the middle of a song could have been devastating.
Instead, Simon suggested that she try a different song—one that he felt would better suit her voice and allow the judges to hear what she could really do.
Sian was now faced with an unexpected challenge.
She had to start again with a completely different song.
Then She Sang “With You”
The second song was “With You” from Ghost: The Musical.
This was the moment the entire audition changed.
Sian appeared much more comfortable with the new song. The performance allowed her voice and emotion to come through in a way that the first song apparently hadn’t.
According to reports of the audition, the judges and audience responded strongly to her second performance, with the atmosphere changing dramatically from the nervous beginning.
Simon later explained that he liked the second song because Sian seemed much more relaxed and that he felt the judges were finally hearing the real singer behind the nerves.
From Nervous Contestant to Four Yeses
The unexpected change worked.
Sian received four yeses from the judges and advanced in the competition.
For someone who had been so nervous about appearing on the show, the result was an emotional moment.
Her daughter had believed in her enough to apply on her behalf—and now Sian had managed to prove that she belonged on that stage.
One of the most memorable reactions came from David Walliams, who compared the transformation in her performance to a caterpillar turning into a butterfly.
But There Was More to Her Story
Interestingly, Sian wasn’t actually a complete newcomer to music.
Research published after her audition revealed that she had considerable musical experience. Radio Times reported that she had trained in voice, musical theatre, piano, keyboard and flute, and had spent around 15 years performing in different musical projects.
She had also performed professionally, including work connected with an ABBA tribute act, private and corporate events, and other singing projects.
That makes the audition even more interesting.
The woman who appeared extremely nervous on the Britain’s Got Talent stage was actually an experienced performer who was facing the enormous pressure of a national television audition.
The Moment That Changed Everything
The most memorable part of Sian’s audition wasn’t simply that Simon stopped her.
It was what happened after he stopped her.
Instead of giving up after her first song was interrupted, she accepted the challenge, changed songs and delivered a performance that earned four yeses.
Her story is a reminder that sometimes the first attempt doesn’t show what a person is truly capable of.
Sian walked onto the stage nervous and uncertain.
She left having shown the judges—and herself—that she could do it.
